  1. Belau, Republic of, formerly Palau
  2. Self-governing island group in Micronesia;
  3. area 500 sq km/193 sq mi; population (1988)
  4. 14,000. It is part of the US Trust Territory,
  5. and became internally self-governing 1980.
  6. There are 26 larger islands (8 inhabited) and
  7. about 300 islets. Three referendums have
  8. shown that Belau wishes to remain
  9. `non-nuclear', although the USA is exerting
  10. strong pressure to secure nuclear facilities
  11. for itself. Spain held the islands from about
  12. 1600, and sold them to Germany 1899. Japan
  13. seized them in World War I, administered them
  14. by League of Nations mandate, and used them
  15. as a naval base during World War II. They
  16. were captured by the USA 1944, and became
  17. part of its Trust Territory 1947.
